We moved offices over the weekend so I spent the day unpacking and trying to orientate myself in a new building. It's been refurbished so it's much nicer than my old office. It's also oddly familiar and I can't think why. It's been bugging me all day.

I took the girls to the RSPB reserve at Sandy at the weekend and it was lovely. The girls were really good and hardly complained at all about the very tiny hills. They were both very patient and quiet sitting in the bird hut looking for all the different birds.

I've been in my job three months now which means, providing they don't fire me, I'm half way through the contract. It's been getting busier for me and more complicated. There seem to be a lot of layers and, in my opinion, pointless steps which clog everything up. I'm finding this frustrating but I just keep reminding myself I want a paycheck and a recent reference. Nothing else really matters. Not my circus and all that.

At home I'm struggling with teaching the girls to be more helpful. The very act of putting their own stuff away is met with such resistance and, I believe, deliberate poor performance. They wail that they can't do stuff that I'm sure they can. Both me and their father are naturally neat so it's a bit baffling why they insist on tipping everything out all the time.

My in-laws bought Legoland tickets for Christmas so we headed off on Monday to stay in a nearby hotel. It was a very posh hotel. With a lovely looking spa that I didn't get to use. Anyway we got to Legoland as it was opening and it was already heaving. To be honest I was expecting more lego and fewer rides so it's more of a lego-themed amusement park but it was good. The girls were exceptionally patient with the huge queues and the endless walking. I tried not to have major panics at the inflated prices! They had a blast though. Charlotte loved all the rides but Hannah got scared on a couple. She was very brave though and didn't seem put off. Highly recommend it.

Giving up

Like many people I think, I didn't much like being forced to sign a new user agreement just to get back into my own journal. I've made a new one at Dreamwidth (same user name) although as I only really read a few journals on here now (and even fewer read me) I suspect this is really the end of online journalling for me.

For years and years I have cycled without a bicycle helmet. I'd looked at the stats and felt convinced that it is safer overall if everyone cycles without one (not including racing or mountain biking). In my new commute I'd noticed that the cars and vans pass really closely the nearer to my destination I get. Then I noticed that far more of the other cyclists have helmets on than at the beginning of my journey. The difference between people who work with computers and people who work in a hospital? I don't know but I felt increasingly unsafe and threatened so I went and bought a helmet. I don't mind wearing it, I mostly forget it's there so whatever. I think cars are now passing closer than before but maybe that's my own bias.

I feel like a traitor though. I feel like I'm contributing in a little way to the idea that cycling is dangerous and unsafe. That I need to protect myself rather than cars needing to take care.

I finished my temporary contract this week. I feel that it went well and I felt a bit sad to be leaving. I did find that I had only a couple of office suitable outfits to wear. So today I went and bought some work clothes. I hope I haven't jinxed any chance of getting another job. It was very odd buying a bunch of stuff after years of being very careful and basically avoiding buying anything for myself.

In other news this morning I watched Hannah playing 'an angel' in her nativity play. It was very cute but unfortunately I spent quite a lot of the play watching the screen of someone else's iPhone. I wasn't close enough to say anything and I'm not sure I'd dare anyway. Is there modern etiquette on this? I don't know, it seemed rude to me.

Yesterday accidentally became flat round food day. I had pancakes for breakfast, pizza for lunch and then fajitas for tea.

It's been brought to my attention that some people were banned from commenting in this journal. I hadn't knowingly banned anyone. I finally tracked down the 'ban/unban user from commenting' page and found a little list of people. I can't see how I could have done this accidentally. Has this happened to anyone else?

Iain took Charlotte to vote on their way to nursery so when I took her later on she ran on ahead and told me 'This is where you vote, Mummy'. Helpful child :-)

I went to see The Wrestler today. I wasn't really expecting too much from it but I was pleasantly surprised. I'm not much of a crier when it comes to films but I was moved to tears on more than one occasion. The sadness and loneliness of the main character was tangible and beautifully expressed.

On top of my normal routine, I managed to do some baking today. I was feeling pretty pleased with myself until I realised I had forgotten to grease the paper and I had to peel it off very slowly and carefully. There are still little bits left on. I do hope it's not poisonous. Oops.

Does anyone know where I can take old, battered shoes and boots for recycling? I thought the textiles recycling bin at Tesco would be OK, but it specifies 'Good Quality' shoes and these are definitely not.
